when the cosmos was young and the celestial deities ruled the heavens, Surya Dev married Sandhya, a beautiful and devoted wife.
However, Surya’s brilliance and heat became unbearable for Sandhya. Unable to endure his radiance any longer, she decided to leave him temporarily and perform penance so she can get power to face Surya Dev Fearing that her absence might anger Surya Dev, Sandhya created a shadow of herself, Chhaya, to take her place and tend to Surya in her stead.
Surya, unaware of this substitution, accepted Chhaya as his wife. Over time, Chhaya gave birth to Shani Dev, who was born dark and radiant with a divine aura. Surya Dev, with his fiery and prideful nature, noticed that Chhaya’s behavior was different from Sandhya’s.
She seemed distant and cold, which made him suspicious. He began to treat Chhaya with indifference and often accused her of disloyalty. This harsh treatment extended to her children, particularly Shani Dev.
Surya Dev doubted Shani’s divine nature because of his dark complexion and showed little affection toward him.
Despite this, Shani grew up with an unyielding sense of justice, deeply influenced by his mother’s teachings and his own spiritual austerities. Shani Dev was not just an ordinary child he was destined to become the Lord of Karma and Justice.
Observing his father’s arrogance and neglectful behavior toward his mother Chhaya and himself, Shani grew increasingly resentful.
In his eyes, Surya Dev’s actions were unjust, and justice was a principle Shani could never compromise on even for his own father. Determined to correct the imbalance, Shani performed intense penance and acquired immense powers from Mahadev. Mahadev was happy with Shani’s Bhakti and crowned him as Lord of Karma and Justice ,With these newfound abilities, Shani Dev decided to confront his father. One day, Shani Dev confronted Surya Dev about his harsh treatment of Chhaya and their children. Surya, blinded by pride, dismissed Shani’s words, refusing to accept his wrongdoing.
Angered by this arrogance, Shani cast his malefic gaze upon his father, dimming Surya’s radiance and weakening his energy. As the Sun’s light faded, chaos spread across the cosmos, alarming the celestial beings who depended on Surya’s brilliance for life and balance.
Surya Dev, now reduced to a shadow of his former self, sought help from the sages and Devas to understand the cause of his plight. They revealed that this was the result of Shani Dev’s karmic justice and explained how Surya’s arrogance and mistreatment of his family had led to this moment.
Realizing his mistakes, Surya Dev felt a deep sense of remorse. He approached Shani Dev and sincerely apologized for his actions. He promised to treat Chhaya and Shani with the respect and fairness they deserved. Shani Dev, who was strict but not devoid of compassion, accepted his father’s apology.
He lifted the curse, restoring Surya Dev’s radiance and power. From that day onward, their relationship became one of mutual respect. Shani Dev continuing his duty as the Lord of Karma, ensuring that justice prevailed in the universe even among the Devas.
